Dark Room Lives

A few people have been wondering whether or not the project was dead, because it hasn’t been updated in quite some time. While it isn’t dead, I haven’t had the time to work on it. But, I have no intentional of just letting it fall along the way side.

I have decided it might be in the best interest of the project to bring on another person of two in order to start getting some of these outstanding bugs taken care of. So, if anyone is competent with C# and the .NET framework, drop me a line.

  1. This is exactly what I was looking for! I love your little tool, but I’m also annoyed by some bug that shouldn’t be too hard to fix. I was allready thinking about making my own version (actually started work on it…). But joining the Dark Room project might be much better. Please drop me a line so I can introduce myself personally.

  2. Woohoooo!!!! I can’t wait πŸ˜€

Ignore all of the haters, btw…your program helps me out immensely…my ADD doesn’t kick in and convince me to play Counterstrike lol

  3. I agree, this is a great program. I can’t really tell how much I’ve written, which makes me write longer. And the light red on black that I made it is just perfect.

  4. i like the program, but i have a stupid question.. I just lost my work to a crash i wish i had saved.. and i am furious.. not at the program (since i should probably save more often..) but is there any way back log what was written? (it asked me to save when it crashed.. i thought i was safe.. but now i can’t find anything at all, it didn’t even give me a chance to name the file)

  5. You know what? Never mind. I need to learn to lose sometimes. (I didn’t really make sense in my last post) (keep up the good work!)

  6. Avsc-

The saving depends on how you have Dark Room configured. By default it caches writing in a file, so when you open it again it is still there. But, there are also settings for autosave, and a variety of other configuration.

  7. Hey, wanted to drop a line saying that I got into Dark Room last NaNoWriMo and enjoyed your work. Also, due to a recent computer problem, I can now report that Dark Room seems to work just fine on Windows 98 SE, or at least on this on.

  8. Just downloaded Dark Room tonight, you can see the result on a post scheduled for Sept 29th entitled, “Mommy You’ve Got to Stay”.

Dark room was very inspiring. Thank you.

  9. My friend uses Dark Room, but I can’t get it to run correctly. After I extract the files i downloaded, I try to run the program. Instead it gives me this error message: The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000135). Click on OK to terminate the application.

  10. …excuse me for my terrible english.
Thanks. Thanks for your software. Wather for my blind eyes. For my ‘idea’ of writing. Thanks for the green and black. Thanks for the beautifull space give of my words. THANKS for all. Thanks for the ‘crude’ space.
    A great kiss. Really. F_

  11. neat program. i just got the thing, and from now on, notepad is out the window, and maybe Word. i was just curious, do you have plans for making this open-source? or perhaps just add the option for different text colors (i was thinking a blue would look nice). but very cool!

  12. @anonymous:

right-click anyware in the text and select ‘Preferences’. You can set any text and background color you like. I personally like orange text on a black background.

    hope this helps

  13. Um.. Just an FYI. This Dark Room application is severely pissing me off, and I’m baffled as to how useless the Help button is. All I’m trying to do is find out what the four buttons on the right side do. But considering that they aren’t labeled, and whenever I click on them (with text highlighted, mind you), they do nothing, I can’t exactly find out now can I? Any information on this would be very helpful..

  14. YaddaYah,

The four arrow buttons scroll the text. The thin ones scroll line by line, the fat/bold ones scroll page by page.

I’m assuming those are the ones you’re talking about, since I can’t see any others in my Darkroom when it’s open. That’s the whole point of it though, right?

THANK YOU for this application. You saved me the financial pain of buying a Mac… that’s how badly I wanted a Writeroom of my own.

  15. I seem to have a problem when using it on Xp. I don’t know if it’s because I’m using pro, or maybe it just doesn’t like me. Don’t even have the opportunity to open it and it causes a fatal error.

    Any ideas? Anyone?

  16. Hey good to see it’s still alive. I read your blog regularly via RSS.

One thing, DarkRoom doesn’t let you use bold or italic fonts. You can pick them in the font selection dialog, but DarkRoom always uses the regular weight.

  17. I like Darkroom, but noticed an odd little glitch. When right-clicking on sound files (MP3, M4A, etc.)one of the options in the pop-up window is “Open with Dark Room.” Odd, since no options for any other word processing programs, or any other non-sound related programs of any sort, are listed. And I really don’t have much reason to open a music file in a word processor, anyway. Just to see if I could get that option OUT of that pop-up window, I thought I’d completely uninstall Dark Room. Sure can’t do that from the uninstall utility in the control panel…the program doesn’t even list there. So I just threw everything (Dark Room) away. Restarted my PC. The option still is listed when I right click on the aforementioned files. I want it out of there. What gives? (Running Windows XP) Please e-mail me a response, as I don’t really have the time (not to be rude…just pragmatic) to keep checking back here for an answer. Thank you for any help you can provide.

  18. Darkroom is quite an excellent programm. Simple, straight and working! If I could only find one additional feature (maybe it is not there) it would be my prefered textedititor, because I hate all those zilion of useless buttons in normal office software for simply writing something.

The thing missing is: the text scrolling. The programm scrolls down and down and I start typing on the lower end of the monitor if writing a longer text. Is there any possibility to activate typewriter-like scrolling – the text is always in the middle of the screen?!

    But nevertheless – great work!!!

  19. I was one of the initial repliers from above, but umm…

Any news on this? lol We’re all waiting with anticipation πŸ˜›

Maybe you could create a topic that asks us what we’d like to have added onto the program, and then pick out the ones that won’t make the prog ‘overweight’?

We just love to hear feedback πŸ˜€

  20. I’d reeaaally like to see an updated Darkroom that can handle unicode! I write in swedish and japanese and can’t use darkroom even though I’d really like too.

    Kepp up the good work!

  21. Dark Room is the best! Thanks!

I have one suggestion. I realize that the program’s raison d’etre is simplicity, but if there were a way to drop footnotes and endnotes, I think I’d be in heaven. I’m a law student/summer associate at a law firm, and I need footnote and endnote ability. I’d program it myself, but sadly I gotz no skillz yo.

    Cheers!

  22. Wonderful app! Thank you very much!

Changed the text color to amber (reminds me of my first monochrome terminal).

    Some suggestions for further releases:
    – In Fullscreen mode the warning dialog box (about saving document changes) should be in the same colours as text and background.
    – Closing the editor by e.g. ctrl-^ should close the editor without the warning box about saving document changes.

    Cheers!

  23. Hi Jeff,

I love this little thingy (thanks!) and I wonder whether I can assist you with some coding. Just drop me a line if you’re interested. Thanks.

  24. Hi. Thanks for making this available. I have WriteRoom on my Mac, but when I want to write using my Windows [spit] laptop, I can now use this. Great work.

  25. I love DarkRoom, in fact I have it open in the background. There is one thing that is really irritating. It knows to open last edited document, however when I try to do Ctrl-S to save it, it says untitled and I need to show where the file it.
Being a .Net project, that would be something I would fix in a minute, if I just could get my hands on source code.
Any suggestion, notice or whatever that would help me would be welcome.
Again I love it and use it often, just this little thing is spoiling the fun.

    Thanks for writing it.

  26. THANK YOU FOR THIS! I CANNOT EMPHASIZE THIS ANY MORE! πŸ™‚

I just have one request. Do you mind just adding a bullets feature. Taking down point form notes are nice.

  27. spoke with a friend of mine yesterday at about darkroom and her writing process. We talked about some of the tools that quote support the writer” in many aspects of writing and she thought that the big problem with most of them came from the “all in one, try to serve everybody’s need” aspect of these programs. Her opinion was that maybe, just maybe a good set of small tools a writer can pick from based on their need would be a better solution. For example, something like darkroom with the ability to full paragraphs and rearranged them would be a good next step. This implies the ability to look at two disparate sections of the document at the same time.

External tools to format and arrange the text would be the next stage. Although this gets interesting when trying to trade off between simplicity and focus on editing versus stylistic elements. what you don’t want to do is get to a point where changing the text requires redoing of all the stylistic work that comes later as well as avoiding the inability to propagate changes to your text late in the process of production back to the original raw text. One idea is folding of stylistic notation keeping stylistic and textual elements together but not necessarily visible at the same time.

    just a couple of thoughts.

And yes, I’m still looking for handicap accessibility information as I posted on the announcement of the last release.*help*

  28. How do I UNINSTALL Dark Room?

The program download contains no uninstall utility that I can find. As well, Dark Room doesn’t appear in the index of installed software when I open the ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS option under Control Panel. I am running the program under Windows XP Home Edition.

    Instructions would be greatly appreciated!

  29. Huemul: I don’t think you need to uninstall it, since it was never installed in the first place. What I’m saying is that the program was an executable which runs standalone, so I don’t you need to uninstall it. You can just delete the application if you want to totally remove it from your hard disk.

  30. “Dark Room Lives”

Heh, if this is what Dark Room is like when it’s living, I’d hate to see it when it’s dead. πŸ˜‰

  31. Love the concept of darkroom. Love what everyone’s saying about it. Would love to experience it.

…alas I’m getting same error as Clay:

“The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000135). Click on OK to terminate the application.”

    (running windows xp pro)

    Cliff

  32. Hey, I love darkroom and I thought I’d report a pretty fatal bug.

When I changed user preferences and then abnormally terminated the program (power outage), the file user.config remained in ~Local Settings\Application Data\DarkRoom\DarkRoom.exe_Url_4emb2bjkrbmf3qe3qw330flsxcewbuml.8.0.0 .
Until I found and deleted this file, I got System.Configuration.ConfigurationErrorsException:
Configuration system failed to initialize when I tried to use darkroom. The user.config file was mentioned in the first line of the detailed error message. Downloading again was no help, of course, as the file remained.

I just tried to replicate the problem to get the full error output by modifying preferences and killing the process. User.config remained but the program didn’t crash on startup. So it may not be a big issue, but when it does happen it renders the program unusable on the machine.

Using Darkroom 0.8b on XP with .net 2.0 + 3.0

  33. bigreddog and Clay,

I had the same problems as you, with the β€œThe application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000135). Click on OK to terminate the application.” Message. There is an odd workaround for this.

You have to go to the Dark Room homepage
    http://jjafuller.com/dark-room
and click on the link to
    .NET Framework 2.0

You then have to download this large and obnoxious windows thing, and install it. Once that is done, you can then open Dark Room no problems.

  34. To remove the ‘open with Darkroom’ on the right click context menu, just edit the registry and search for ‘Open with darkroom’. Delete this folder.

    1. I found it in the registry at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\*\OpenWithList, just delete it and all your dreams will come true.

  35. I deleted all files for Darkroom, but when I highlight text on my computer, it becomes green -____-
how do i completely get rid of darkroom?
